This is the Eight Issue of a "Grouper Electronic Newsletter" which is being circulated through e-mail, and now is also available from the grouper website. The purposes and objectives are to keep members of the grouper discussion group and other related parties updated on the latest information on research and development of grouper and coral reef fish aquaculture. The information available through this bi-monthly Newsletter is also available on the Grouper website. Many of the articles and news featured in this newsletter will also be published in hard copy in Aquaculture Asia and the SEAFDEC Asian Aquaculture magazines. To make this Grouper Electronic Newsletter more informative and useful to all of you, comments, suggestions, as well as contributions of articles, news and information on related topics and activities are very welcome. As a result of the APEC FWG meeting held in Seattle, USA in July an extension tothe existing grouper network project was approved, together with a new APEC project on farming the reef: Collaborative APEC Grouper Research and Development Network Collaboration between the two projects through APGN (Asia-Pacific Grouper Network) will take place to better utilise the available resources and information to best serve the projects' objectives. With the growing interest in Cobia culture in the region, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) reported that cobia (Rachycentron canadum) were induced to spawn in a recirculating water system. Cobia are considered prime candidates for aquaculture development because of their fast growth rate as juveniles and an expanding demand for them in the seafood market place. The preliminary version of the proceedings for the Regional Workshop on Aquaculture of Coral Reef Fishes and Sustainable Reef Fisheries held in Sabah, Malaysia 1996 is now available from the grouper web site. The write out will cover marine live food fish, fresh and chilled fish, and also ornamental species in the region. Recognising that there is growing interest in aquaculture of a wide range of marine fish species, and that grouper 'farmers' often culture a wide diversity of fish species, this section will include other fish species where relevant.
A new section "Products & Services" will be created in the grouper website and the electronic newsletter. This new section will serve as a platform to provide information on aquaculture equipments; fry; live & fresh chilled; consultation services; projects; etc. If you wish to include your company's products or services in this section please provide a brief write out of your products & services, together with full address and e-mail contact, and send it to Asia-Pacific Grouper Network (APGN). Please be advised that the aim of this section is to serve the marine finfish aquaculture sector only, so your products and services should be related to the sector. This advertising activity is free of charge, initially this will run for a period of six months. The information will be posted to all the subscriber of this Electronic Newsletter, as well as in the Grouper Network Website. The advertiser is advised to update Grouper Network their products & services on a regular basis, and provide feedback to Grouper Network with regards to any enquiry or transaction occurred result in this advertising activity. The purpose is to examine the efficiency and effectiveness of this system to the Grouper Network in the region.
